Innovative Project
The Pilot Project on One Stop Services for Ageing Service Users of Hostels for Severely Mentally Handicapped Persons and Hostels for Moderate Mentally Handicapped Persons
Project Brief

In view of the ageing phenomenon of residents of residential care homes for people with intellectual disabilities, their physical conditions and living needs are much different than before. The workshop training model and manpower are insufficient to meet the needs of elderly and frail residents. The Social Welfare Department thus has launched a 3-year project called “the Pilot Project on One-stop Services for Ageing Service Users of Hostel for Severely Mentally Handicapped Persons and Hostels for Moderately Mentally Handicapped Persons" in 18 residential homes for people with intellectual disabilities in Hong Kong since May 2023 to arrange suitable day training and care services. For our service users, it also saves them the daily commute to and from the institutions, thus meeting their real needs.

Hong Ping Hostel, Hong Tsui Hostel and Lok Fu Hostel of our Association had successfully applied to become participating units and received a total of HK$16.63 million from the Social Welfare Department to operate this project. Each of the three hostels has arranged 10 service users to "retire" and leave the workplace or day center to receive day care, rehabilitation training and social and recreational activities directly in the hostel to enjoy their old age.
